Andrea Roberts | U/T
2016 | laser cut newspaper | 13.5 x 27.5 in
Reflective of a broad concern that links technology and the self, U/T by Andrea Roberts uses a laser cutter to produce delicate patterns on newspaper. The patterns reference another body of work that takes the formal quality of metal screens, which act as the only portal to the outside world for a reclusive order of nuns. Multiple interacting patterns conjoin with an unconventional shape, created through the laser cut process, to propose an aesthetically pleasing and technically puzzling final work.
Andrea Roberts is a Winnipeg based artist whose practice incorporates sound, sculpture, text, and installation. Often exploring technology and the self, Roberts’ work focuses on both object and environment. Roberts received their MFA in sculpture from California College of the Arts in 2014 and their BFA Hounours in sculpture from the University of Manitoba’s School of Art in 2011. Roberts has been exhibited internationally in both group and solo presentations, including Superimposition, Plug In ICA, Winnipeg; The Yolk of Menial Light, Ace Art Inc., Winnipeg; and Stimulus, Response, Affect, Oakland University Art Gallery, Rochester. Roberts performs as VOR, a solo noise project, and is a founding member of the feminist artist collective ngtvspc.
