Nitéwake:non addresses connections of memory, history, and home, through explorations on and with the land. This piece is site-specific to Six Nations of the Grand River Territory, or as, General’s title of her work translates to “the place where I come from.”
General is a Mohawk and Oneida artist from the Six Nations of the Grand River Territory. Primarily a photo-based artist, her work also incorporates audio, video and installation. General’s practice explores concepts such as identity, relationship to the land, memory, and childhood. She graduated from the Ontario College of Art and Design with her Bachelor of Fine Arts and earned her MFA from York University. Her work has been shown in several locations throughout Toronto, including solo exhibitions at the Harbourfront Centre and Gallery 44. The work General donated to the auction was featured in Resilience, The National Billboard Exhibition Project by MAWA. In 2018, General was the winner of the Emerging Leadership Award from the Ontario Arts Council.
