Simon Hughes (b: 1973, Winnipeg, MB)
A recent graduate from the MFA program at the University of California, Irvine, Simon Hughes is a local artist who has used many media including painting, video and film. He is most well known for his watercolour paintings that depict stereotypical Canadian scenes of snow, log cabins, ice floes and Northern lights. His work is also influenced by Modernist architecture and abstraction. He creates imaginative scenarios and cityscapes that question our history and geography in a dream-like and playful nature.
Hughes work has been included in exhibitions at the National Gallery of Canada, the Confederation Centre for the Arts, Plug In ICA and the Winnipeg Art Gallery. His video works have been screened internationally.
