Trance was intended as an alternative to the conventional solo survey or retrospective exhibition, in that it explores the collaborative process as an important issue in contemporary art and relates it to work by artists in this community, here the works of Saskatoon artists, Patrick Traer and Janet Werner.
“…the structural elements of Traer’s video piece…do not work against Werner’s paintings in the adjoining room. Rather, when combined with the distinctive elements of Werner’s painting, the hitherto abnormal state of suspended consciousness known as a trance may appear altogether standard, the side effect of sustained personal despondency so familiar to late 20th century art and other human realities as to feel reassuring.”
—Wayne Baerwaldt, from the essay, On Trance
